Does salinity neutralize bacteria and viruses present in raw or 'treated' sewage dumped into the sea?
The idea of sewage dumping, in whatever form - be it from coastal resorts or cruise ships - is particularly noxious. On the other hand, if the salinity of sea water makes this a non-issue from the point of view of health there is no sense vexing over it and denying oneself a lot of pleasure.

It goes without saying that in some cases there may be an issue of proximity to the discharge, but granted that this is not present, is there any good reason not to swim in areas where one knows sewage dumping is the rule? In many coastal areas, particularly on small islands, resort firms have no other choice. Is this a health problem? Is sea swimming to be avoided except in pristine areas?

Nope. Used to live in Hawaii where beaches were closed up to 7 days after a major sewage spill. What eventually happens is the sewage breaks up, and the dilution makes it okay. But the bacteria is still present until the sea life cleans it up—yuk. Fish Burgers anyone??

Depends on the bacteria. Some bacteria tolerate, prefer, or even require high salinity ("halophiles"). Examples would be Staph aureus and Vibrio sp. A virus that can be passed in stool and survive in salt-water is Hepatitis A (oysters).

Others are inhibited by high salt content, which is why a salt gargle can be an effective treatment for a sore throat.

The most important factors in determining whether or not you get an infection is the infectious dose (concentration of pathogens in the sewage you contact) and your immune system (cuts in skin? innate immunodeficiency? previous exposure to pathogen?). If your immune system is intact and the concentration of sewage is low, you’re probably OK. If the concentration of sewage is high and/or you have deficiencies in your immune system, you might want to avoid swimming in or drinking the water.
